What is Gender based Violence (GBV)?
Gender-based violence (GBV) in Uganda is the intentional act of harming someone based on their gender. It can be physical, sexual, emotional, or economic, and can take place in public or in private. GBV is a violation of human rights.
Examples of GBV
- Physical: Beating, hitting, punching, strangling, or using weapons
- Sexual: Rape, sexual harassment, or female genital mutilation (FGM)
- Emotional: Verbal abuse, blackmail, threats, or humiliation
- Economic: Denial of resources, such as financial services, land ownership, or inheritance rights
- Harmful practices: Child marriage, forced marriage, or confinement
What is Online gender based violence (OGBV)?
Online gender-based violence is targeted harassment and prejudice through technology against people, disproportionately women, based on their gender.
